Welcome to the D'eC report
This is a new podcast that I'm putting up as part of e-Commerce for Drupal. It's going to include information about where we're going, how to do things, and maybe even interviews with people that are doing things.
00:00:25 Now, I got some {xxxx} software to be able to do this really well, so I may be able to do both video and screencasts and really, I think, do them well. So I'm really happy with its output, and I've been working at changing the drupalecommerce.org site, so we can build this information in a better way. And I'll tell you more about these things and allow you to do things easier within e-Commerce.
00:01:03 Now, these podcasts will likely be short, a few machines each, some might {xxxx} If you are willing us to demonstrate how things are gonna be done, then please just contact me through drupal.org or through drupalecommerce.org, and we can all think about doing some of this distance, so the most distance that we have the better.
00:01:36 Now, one of the biggest questions that has been coming through over the past few weeks since Drupal 6 was released was when Drupal 6 was going to get its own version of e-Commerce. Well, at this stage, we are still creating version 4 of e-Commerce, with a lot of changes, and a lot of these changes are for the better. There's still some gaps and all, but we are getting there, so it's getting closer.
00:02:18 Massa and I haven't been able to work on this as much as we'd have liked to lately. After I get moved in the next week or so, and sit up at my new place and stuff (?) I hope to be able to start working on e-Commerce a lot more and start being able to get up and ready towards {beaters ?} on a 4 release of e-Commerce on Drupal 5. But one of the things that's really been helping at the moment is {some of the namespace ?} He's also one of the maintainers. He's been doing a lot of work and going through all the code and everything, and just cleaning up, just making sure {xxx code xxx } and it's really looking good now, so we're really happy with what he's done at that. He's still learning some of the new stuff, and making it better, so it is really getting there.
00:03:19 So, once eC 4 is there, if there's any bugs we're gonna fix them, and then we're gonna create a version 4, 4.1 which will include a port to Drupal 6. So, once that's all fresh (?), we'll have a version on Drupal 6 and then we will start building, start working towards version 5 with a lot of rough ideas that I have.
00:03:53 At the moment, there's still a few gaps in the system. I'd like to get Commissions finished off: we still need to be able to turn commissions into receipts ; as well as the Payments module, so that we can create a « pay to » so we can the pay the commission out to people and also allow credits, existing credits for customers to be used as a method of payment onto the system so that I can say while checking out, I can say I want to click on a check box that says « use existing credits » and if it comes back and says « Yup » it'll use that first, and then now I have to pay a lesser amount, or even just pay up {xxx cross?} The module ought to be able to create payments, so we can actually send payments to people using something like the Paypal « Pay to » option, so you can create a list of people that will gonna get paid to, and this will then also help us to be able to create the Community module.
00:05:12 The Community module is a new feature, which will allow people to specify an amount of the sales that will get donated to e-Commerce and Drupal. So, I can specify a maximum amount per transaction and a percentage and those are just get built up and, according to the rules when this happens, they will then send payment off to Drupal and e-Commerce. Which will be good to help the community in a different way and things like that. Now, this is completely optional, but e-donations that we DO get does allow us to do things like hire people to do specific tasks, and work on ways of bettering our system. The more donations we get, the better/more time we can spend working on things, so that will be good.
00:06:18 There's also a few things that has to be finished in the customer system, such as being able to set cookies, so people can click back, or so when emails get sent out, they get send out with a tag that will allow that person a one click to view invoices, transactions, anything like that. It will effectively allow them to log them and to see the information without actually having to log in, which will be a great feature.
00:06:50 Then there's a few other of the edge parts, things like the connectivity to CiviCRM would be really nice to get finished. And in Drupal 6, it would also be good to be able to use Views to create reports for transactions, and things like that. That will also be really good.
00:07:15 Speaking of Views, one of the things that is gonna be holding us up too, to be able to release on Drupal 6, is Views, and other modules that e-Commerce has dependencies on. I know that some people complain about having dependencies with other modules in the system, and then you can't just do a single download, but being able to put the dependencies into the system so that we're depending on other modules to do some work for us means that we no longer have to worry about doing this work ; so it makes it better for us, and it means that we may end up with functionality we wouldn't even think about or even have time to do it. So it does mean that it makes the installation a little bit more difficult but, with Drupal 5, and definitely with Drupal 6, we're expecting that the installation process will be a lot better. We have got bugs fixed in 6 which will allow us to install things in the right order so everything can get installed.
00:08:26 At this stage, that's about it for me. If there's any information you want to know about, or things like that, or even if we can get sponsors so than we can improve the code {xxxx} it would be most appreciated. And if anyone wants to assist us with the development of e-Commerce, please contact us or even if you want to just start depending (?) on us, check that it is going, things are working the way that they should be and things are doing what you expect them to do.
00:09:10 We need people {xxxx} documentation maybe even {xxxx} like for this here so that will be really good. So I think that's about it, and I hope that people find this helpful. OK, see you later.
...I'm deaf, so it doesn't do me a whole lot of good. Is there any chance of a transcript? (I'm sure hearing viewers would find it useful as well; it's a lot easier to scan text for salient information than to listen through a podcast for it.)
Failing a transcript, is there any chance of information on when e-Commerce for Drupal 6 will be available for testing? I've had no success at all in finding anything about that anywhere on the site.
I am trying to get it cataloged at everyzing http://search.everyzing.com/index.jsp?il=en so that the transcript can be made and the search engine can be used search the pod casts.
I'm not deaf, but I read MUCH better than I listen. :) I'd much rather read something about it than view a video of ANY kind. Any updates on that, or when eC will be available for 6.x? I'm messing with several other 6.x gadgets so I realize that there is a significant lag in development time from Drupal's newest release to having modules for it, but still... eCommerce is crucial. Without it, I either have to give up on 6.x, which I really don't want to do, or find some other e-commerce solution, even though I'd FAR rather keep it all inside Drupal; it vastly simplifies questions of login, profile, etc.
Any chance you can pump up the volume? I've got my volume and speakers on max and I can still barely hear what you're saying.
As for the transcript, any chance that anyone with a few minutes on their hands can write one up? Or at least a summary?
Here's what I could hear:
Drupal 6 version will be a port of eC 4.1, so we need to wait for 4.0 to be completed first.
There is no timeline yet for 4 or 4.1, and Gordon and other main developer haven't been able to do as much as they would have liked in the past weeks. Gordon is moving house soon, and will be able to do more once settled.
Something about a community module for eC4 that will let a percentage of sales automatically be donated to a community effort (Drupal, or D'eC).
[me: Not sure if it will be customizable. Gordon, it would be great if you could set it up to donate to your favorite charity or OSS project, and just have Drupal and D'eC set up as the default projects]
I had a quick look at the first D'EC report last night. The quality of the video is very good and it was very quick to load as well (I watched it on my laptop with a wi-fi connection and it still loaded very quickly). I think it's a great initiative to help keep everyone up to speed what's happening with the ecommerce modules.
In response to the call for suggestions, would it be an idea to split the video podcast into sections? e.g.
Part i - Current status, recent commits and updates.
Part ii - version 4 feature focus and walk-thru. (using the screen grabber and a voice over by yourself to illustrate new features with version 4. You don't have to go through every feature in the one go, you can spread it out over a few episodes.)
Part iii - future plans and feature ideas.
Part iv - live ecommerce site showcase (a quick screen grabber walk thru of a live site using the ecommerce suite of modules with interview of the developer as the voice over)
I'm not sure how difficult it is to do that screen grabber stuff, I imagine it's more time consuming to do compared to a one-take monologue to the camera, but, if it isn't too difficult, it offers a natural visual break to the video podcast.
If you've thought of this already, please disregard but I just thought I'd mention it.
I can move the video out of the was and easily move the video out of the way and show the screen and what I am doing. And then talk though it. It is a lot more natural that other one like SnapX pro which you just point the camera a part of the screen.
With Screen flow it captures the entire screen and then you can blur windows, zoom, basically everything that you would want to do. But during the requiring you are not restricted.

I am using ScreenFlow
I am using ScreenFlow https://www.varasoftware.com/products/screenflow/ which is what I did the first one with and it works great.
I can move the video out of the was and easily move the video out of the way and show the screen and what I am doing. And then talk though it. It is a lot more natural that other one like SnapX pro which you just point the camera a part of the screen.
